St John of God Hospital has 1,700 staff and 5,250 inpatients a month in a private hospital with more than 500 beds and a 24-hour emergency department. The health campus already offers a large number of expert medical services, including 250 consulting specialists, and has close affiliations with teaching institutions such as the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and the University of Notre Dame.
Murdoch University attracts 22,000 students a year, including 2,000 drawn from 100 countries around the world. It boasts 2,000 staff and is recognised as one of Australia’s research institutions, with a focus on health futures, food security and sustainable development. The South Street campus, one of the largest in Australia, is part of the broader precinct of health and education facilities clustered in the Murdoch Activity Centre. The University’s strategic plan envisages the development of new health and biomedical services, cultural amenity, events and commercial activities as the precinct evolves.
South Metropolitan TAFE’s Murdoch campus is another significant higher education facility within the Murdoch Activity Centre area. Its specialty courses in nursing, laboratory work, occupational health and safety and other fields support the health and medical services that will underpin employment in the region. It is a drawcard for students and ideally placed to share in the benefits that come with being part of a thriving city centre.
The Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct will be a catalyst for delivery of the wider Murdoch Activity Centre, and will eventually be home to 1,200 dwellings for 2,400 residents as well as 45,000sqm of health, retail and commercial space to complement the emerging health and education precinct.

The Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct is ideally located for community health providers, medical research institutes or similar facilities to capture the benefits of the proximity to both a private hospital and the State’s newest tertiary hospital.
