Our commitment to Innovation through Demonstration extends across Western Australia. In looking to promote innovative and sustainable housing solutions for WA's regional housing market, LandCorp ran the REAL Challenge housing design competition.
This Innovation through Demonstration project attracted almost 30 applications from entrants who demonstrated that climate responsive housing could be designed and built without the price tag often associated with environmental innovation. Entrants were asked to prepare design concepts for the climatically diverse regions of the Kimberley, Pilbara and South West.
The two winning designs for the South West and Kimberley were built in Collie and Kununurra – and the demonstration houses were opened to the public for a period of approximately 3 months. The REAL Challenge competition resulted in private sector collaboration between builders, architects and designers, around the issues of affordability, climate-responsive design and sustainability in building everyday homes in regional WA.
The winning three-bedroom, two-bathroom home designs met sustainability criteria including being responsive to regional climate, meeting a minimum six-star energy efficiency rating and minimal mechanical heating and cooling as well as being affordable and practical to build.
The winning entries were:
Pilbara - the Oasis design entered by Copraxis Architects and Samson Homes
Kimberley - the K1 design entered by SIA Architects and Northern Aspect Construction
South West - the Wing House design, which was also entered by Copraxis Architects and Samson Homes
