Australia's first housing project specifically designed for the Gen Y community at LandCorp's WGV estate at White Gum Valley has been released for sale.
LandCorp chief executive Mr Frank Marra said the Gen Y homes provided a new and practical model for the building industry which will appeal to the next generation of home buyers looking for sustainable and modern housing options.
"The Gen Y Demonstration Housing Project features three one bedroom, one bathroom homes suited for singles and couples and includes innovative water and energy saving initiatives that will result in lower bills for the residents," Mr Marra said.
"They have been constructed on a 250 square metre block and residents will be at the heart of a vibrant and connected community within the multi award-winning WGV estate."
Mr Marra said the homes have a climate responsive layout, a shared underground rainwater tank, ground-breaking shared solar power and battery storage technology to reduce grid energy use and water and energy performance monitoring.
"They also incorporate accessible design features and an excellent life cycle rating due to their multi-dwelling configuration, low energy construction materials and the inclusion of renewable energy."
Local Fremantle architect David Barr designed the Gen Y homes incorporating solar passive design principles and sustainable materials. The cutting-edge design can be easily replicated across Australia.
"As the first of its kind in Australia, the Gen Y Demonstration Housing Project revolutionises the way developers use small lots to create housing options which are suited for a younger generation of home buyers," Ms Saffioti said.
"The design bridges the gap between a single house and a large apartment block, providing density housing that integrates well in any community."
Data relating to water and energy usage at the Gen Y Housing Project will captured by Curtin University as a part of a four-year 'Living Laboratory' research program to test innovation in a real life setting. The results will help to assess design performance, as well as the impact of technology choice and occupant behaviour on water and energy use.
The project will also explore the inter-relationships between developers, local government, builders and purchasers in regards to low carbon aspirations and outcomes and how these can better align.
While the homes have been designed with Gen Y purchasers in mind LandCorp expects the finished product will also likely appeal to a wider demographic.
Each of the homes will be released for sale via an offers invited process and are priced from $390,000.
