The Middleton Beach Activity Centre development is aimed at creating a lively community hub with potential for new restaurants, cafes, shops, wellness centres/spas, hotel and short stay accommodation as well as permanent residential apartments.

A hugely popular destination with both locals and visitors, Middleton Beach is home to an extensive and beautiful white sand beach with grassed surrounds, various crowd-drawing sporting events, a magnificent 18 hole true links golf course, boutique shops and eateries. It is just a short walk to a whale-watching vantage point, with world renowned WA wineries nearby.

Background:

Middleton Beach is situated about four kilometres east of the city centre and is Albany’s main swimming beach. The development site adjoins Flinders Parade, the main beach thoroughfare.

Following the State Government’s purchase of the development site at the end of November 2014, the Middleton Beach project has been progressed by LandCorp in close collaboration with the City of Albany, Great Southern Development Commission, Department of Regional Development, Department of Planning, Albany Chamber of Commerce and the Albany community.

Together with our partners we have been putting the pieces in place to get the site ready for development by the private sector. A crucial consideration has been to work with the community to determine the sorts of shops, services and amenities that will help drive activation and visitation to the city.

The ultimate aim is to ensure the site is designed to suit community needs, whilst at the same time offering a good outcome for private developers.

As part of our community and stakeholder engagement, we also presented three potential development options, which included ideas on road realignments and parking, pedestrian linkages, the location of food and retail activities as well as residential apartments and a hotel. Input from the community, developers, businesses, planners, architects and key stakeholders helped shape the Concept Plan.
