The transformation of the Leighton Marshalling Yards from a rundown industrial area into a coastal village and beachside attraction is well underway.
We have aimed to create a dynamic, interactive community for both residents and visitors to the beach that also supports new local businesses and strengthens those already established in North Fremantle.
The 4 hectare redevelopment incorporates a blend of residential options, shops, cafes and public open space, with the remaining 13 hectares becoming a coastal reserve.
Sustainability was uppermost in our minds as we began the project and Leighton incorporates principles including accessibility to public transport and work from home opportunities.
Development will be undertaken by Mirvac, Multiplex and Rockingham Park. Mirvac’s development will include a boutique hotel with cafes and retail space.
The Leighton project remains on target to be transformed into a coastal home for about 1,000 people and regional beach recreational precinct by 2012. Construction of the first buildings began in mid-2008.
