Januburu Six Seasons

Community Information

In an effort to build a sustainable house that will maximise Broome’s climate while minimising its environmental footprint, the following information and links are available for you to browse and discuss with your Architect or building designer.

For help in planting a garden that thrives in local conditions, pick up a copy of Tree Talk from Minyirr Park or our Broome office. The book provides information about identifying local Broome trees, the six season cycle of plants and different uses for them.

Another book of interest may be Indigenous Kimberley Trees in Broome by Tom Harley and SKIPA Guide to Planting a Garden in Broome North. Indigenous Kimberley Trees of Broome can be purchased from Kimberley Environmental Horticulture, Environs Kimberley, Saturday Courthouse Markets, Kimberley Bookshop and Hartmanns.

Local Planting Guide - visit the Western Australian Flora page and select ‘Northern – Dampierland’ from the bottom left of the site.

Indigenous public art

The social, cultural and natural environment of this coastal region is depicted in a colourful mosaic at the eastern entrance to Januburu Six Seasons residential estate.

With the guidance of remote community arts worker Maureen Spencer (who sadly recently passed away) and indigenous artist Phillip '95' Green, the Rubibi people have created an intricate mosaic that tells the story of their traditional six seasons.

The entry statement also includes interpretive signage, with plantings of local bush tucker and vegetation, to demonstrate the seasonal changes and a shade shelter to be used as a meeting place.

Sustainability in Action

Januburu Six Seasons demonstrates our commitment to sustainability.

The social, cultural and natural environment of the region are reflected in the following key initiatives:

  • Street and park names reflect the language and culture of the area;
  • Native plant species have been incorporated in landscaping and a colourful mosaic at the eastern entrance to the estate;
  • Water sensitive design features to reduce excess nutrients and other possible pollutants in stormwater entering surrounding bushland and waterways;
  • Orientation of lots designed to capture cooling coastal breezes; and
  • Waterwise landscaping packages for homebuyers.

We are working with the Broome community and local builders to encourage construction of more climate sensitive, energy and water efficient homes, which is also reflected in the design guidelines for the estate.
