Sustainability Audit

After many months of research and consultation the Sustainability Audit was officially launched by the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan Minister for Planning and Infrastructure on Friday 6 May 2005. The Sustainability Audit is made under the Scheme provisions and forms part of the development application and building application assessment and approval processes.

The first of its kind in Western Australia, the Audit is an online assessment tool integrated with the Development Application process, and will form the basis for assessing the sustainability of proposed developments in the ARA redevelopment areas.

A range of minimum requirements have been established and will apply to all developments located in the ARA areas. The audit has been devised to minimise the information needed to complete an application for development while ensuring social, economic and environmental gains.

About the Audit

• A web-based system which includes guidance information allowing developers to complete their assessments on line.

• Access to the site is secure allowing developers to store information and revisit their applications as required.

• Applies to all types of development within the ARA Redevelopment Areas.

• Integrated within the statutory development approvals process – a Sustainability Certificate and evidence of compliance must accompany each development application and building application.

• The system automatically tailors the assessment to the development type and stage of application (DA or BA) so only a minimal number of relevant questions are asked.

• The system provides for ‘self-certification’ of applications enabling rapid processing of applications and enables developers to determine compliance before making a submission.

• All developments will be required to meet improved levels of performance in respect to sustainability and consumers can choose developments based upon a certificate of performance.
