Open Space

3.8ha of parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities.

Large areas of public open space are incorporated into the estates landscaping, as well as a viewing platform and walking trail around the outskirts of the estate that navigate and protect the sensitive mangrove and foreshore areas.

Development guidelines to support the environment

Environmental management was integral in the planning and design of the estate.

Right from the outset LandCorp developed and implemented design guidelines which incorporate measures to reduce the potential impact on the local fauna and flora - in particular the nearby nesting turtles.

Care for Hedland Environmental Association partnered with LandCorp to promote responsible behaviour and set clear guidelines to protect the turtles.

There has been a lot of attention to detail, right down to having a leading turtle expert working with the project team to ensure 'turtle friendly' design is used in the Pretty Pool street lighting.

Key steps undertaken at Pretty Pool have also included the installation of signage to identify turtle nesting sites; an annual fox trapping campaign, dune revegetation; bollards to restrict vehicle access to the beach and controlled beach entry/exit points for pedestrians.

The flatback turtle nesting runs from October to February while hatching season traditionally starts in December and continues through to April.

Design guidelines apply to promote sustainable principles and housing suited to the Pilbara climate. Design measures have been applied to the estate to help reduce unnatural light sources which can be a potential threat to Pretty Pool’s turtle population.
