The heart of Newman is currently undergoing a huge transformation to become a vibrant cultural and business hub that is perfectly suited for the Pilbara environment.
Works have commenced in the new town square which has been beautifully designed to enhance Newman’s liveability and will feature landscaping, decorative shade structures, public art installation and an entertainment area, which will feature a stage for live performances and a huge media screen.
In addition to the improved lifestyle amenities the new town square will provide local and visiting businesses access to pop-up retail and office spaces in the new ‘business incubator’ facility that is a critical part of the project’s design to support and encourage Newman’s economic growth.
The State Government’s Pilbara Cities initiative is funding the $40mil revitalisation project and it's being delivered by LandCorp in partnership with the Shire of East Pilbara.
LandCorp and the Shire of East Pilbara have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which details how both organisations will maximise the utilisation of the new facilities and manage the cost and maintenance of the new town centre.
The town square revamp builds on works already completed, including the development of a new east/west entry into the heart of the town, realignment of roads, upgraded power and wastewater services, quality landscaping, new car parks and an improved pedestrian and bike network. Newman is a critical service centre for some of the world’s biggest iron ore projects and is home to a growing close-knit community. The town square project demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to improve regional centres in Western Australia and make them even better places to live, work and relax.
