21 submissions presented a wide range of ideas, an overall design philosophy and a poster. Submissions underwent a rigorous assessment process. The following six architects/groups were shortlisted to participate in the second stage of the competition which involved further development of their 'Idea' into a concept design.
Stage 2 submissions demonstrated a variety of solutions to address flexibility, adaptability and sustainability in an innovative, spatially efficient and climate responsive way.
On Monday 24 March 2014 at an event hosted by Fernella Kernebone from ABC's By Design programme, the winner of the Gen Y Demonstration Housing competition was announced as The Step House by David Barr.
The house will be built on Lot 7 of the White Gum Valley residential estate where it will be open for display. Industry, community and school groups will be invited to visit and learn more about the design and the sustainability initiatives integrated into the design.
The Stage 2 submissions have been exhibited around Perth at key industry events.
